My shakuhachi teacher Shinzen, posed the question below, for us both to contemplate. My answer follows.
The sound and the space, are they the same or different?
Without the space (silence, emptiness), no sound can be found.
The sound appears in the space, which contains all things.
One could also say, the space creates the sound.
