hermitage

Amongst White Clouds.

“I'll tell you what hermits realize. If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you'll come to understand that you're connected with everything.”

In love with the practice of hermitage, I lived in and explored many hermitages this past year.

Amongst White Clouds is a documentary about the Zen Buddhist hermit tradition.

A direct look into the lives of Masters, monks, nuns and ascetics living in huts and hermitages amidst the Zhongnan Mountains of China.

The Zhongnan Mountains have been home to recluses for over five thousand years, many of China's realised Buddhist Masters attained enlightenment here.

The film’s director, Edward Burger, is one of only a few foreigners to have lived and studied with these hidden sages. In Amongst White Clouds, he reveals to us their tradition, their wisdom, and the hardship and joy of their everyday lives.
